| hen something is not right with either the look or the function of your nose, it is practically impossible to ignore it. You are reminded every time you look in the mirror, or when you are struggling to breathe comfortably. The importance of a proportional, functional nose is evident in the fact that rhinoplasty (here in Northern Virginia and the rest of the country) is one of the most commonly-performed plastic surgeries, and has been for decades. |
At Plastic Surgery Services of Fredericksburg, we specialize in rhinoplasty (also called a "nose job") for patients who want to bring their nose into harmony with their other facial features, and still maintain its character and function. We believe that the best rhinoplasties enhance the features Mother Nature gave you.
If you would like a personal rhinoplasty evaluation, you can contact us online to request a consultation with one of our specialists. Or you can call our office at 540-371-7730 and one of our knowledgeable staff members will be happy to help you.
What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is surgery to reshape the nose in order to correct cosmetic concerns, improve the function of the nose, or both. Common reasons for nose surgery include:
- Reducing the size of the nose
- Correcting a prominent hump
- Refining the tip of the nose
- Decreasing the width of the nostrils
- Correcting asymmetry
We also perform rhinoplasty to correct damage to the nose caused by injury or by previous surgeries. Regardless of your reason for choosing rhinoplasty, our board-certified plastic surgeons seek to maintain or improve the nose's ability to function properly.

Revision Rhinoplasty
Some of our rhinoplasty patients come to us for revision or secondary rhinoplasty, which means that they have already undergone one or more nose surgeries with another surgeon. Revisions are typically more complex than a primary rhinoplasty; this is often due to the presence of scar tissue, compromised cartilage, changes in skin thickness, and the need to restore the internal functional features of the nose which may have been impaired by a prior surgery. Many rhinoplasty surgeons in the Fredericksburg, Fairfax and Richmond, Virginia areas do not perform revision rhinoplasty for these reasons. Our surgeons have extensive training and experience in revision rhinoplasty, as well as other specialized nose surgeries such as septoplasty.
Your Procedure
Our surgeons perform rhinoplasty using either an open or a closed approach, depending on the anatomy of your nose and the extent of the concerns being addressed. Open rhinoplasty utilizes tiny incisions made from the outside of the nose, while closed rhinoplasty does not require any external incisions. Although a closed rhinoplasty assures there will be no visible scarring, the tiny scar from an open rhinoplasty is, in most cases, practically undetectable.
Recovery and Results
Recovery from nose surgery is relatively straightforward. After the procedure, you can expect to wear a splint to protect the new shape of your nose. You will also experience some swelling and bruising. Follow-up appointments and adhering to your doctor's guidelines are essential, as your nose may continue to change in subtle ways for up to a year after surgery.
