Plastic Surgery Services of Fredericksburg is pleased to announce the addition of the Smartlipo MPX to our practice. Smartlipo is a minimally invasive laser lipolysis system. Smartlipo is ideal for treating localized fat deposits on the face and body. The system's proprietary pulsing format delivers laser energy through a cannula to liquify the fat, which is then removed from the body. The laser energy also coagulates the tissue, thereby sculpting body contours and tightening the skin. The procedure generally causes less bleeding, swelling and bruising than traditional liposuction, resulting in fewer complications and faster recovery. Cynosure received U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance to market Smartlipo in 2006.

Laser Lipolysis was recently discussed in the May/June 2008 issue of "Healthy Aging" magazine. The article states that laser-assisted lipolysis is easily tolerated by patients, the incisions are tiny and do not require sutures, the procedure is less traumatic than traditional liposuction and has a shorter recovery time.Laser assisted lipolysis also appears to tighten the skin and reduce laxity. The procedure is good for treating the submental area (under the chin), abdomen, upper arms, hips, thighs, knees, calves and ankles.
